Rangercast Episode 150: Oh Yeah, This Thing

With the nice round number and the ridiculous amount of time it took to get it edited, you might think episode 150 would be a milestone epic. Hah, no. We've got Shamus, though! The video whiz joins Rangercast from... well, actually, sitting right next to Tyler. So for the first time EVER, Tyler can be hit every time he makes a bad pun. Also joining us: Both Toms (y3k and MysticSentai). Today:

-Jason David Frank beat up some dude

-It's Go-sei-jaa. Not Gosaiguh. Sorry Tom C. But anyway, how is it?

-MMPR. Kind of OK, just like the good old days.

-State of the Podcast: Not dead yet.

Also, check us out at Balticon!

Rangercast Episode 149: Live at Katsucon 16 (w/ special guest Tony Oliver)

Recorded at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Md., on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2010.

Tyler and friend-of-the-show Walter Fletcher (you may know him as Shadowguyver in some circles) preach the gospel to an audience of impressionable otaku. Then at some point, MMPR mastermind and Katsucon guest Tony Oliver pops in, sits down and talks about the good old days, the moment when he first realized PR was a hit, working on the Dragon Knight game and what he thinks about MMPRv2, among other things.

(If somebody out there has a picture of us doing our thing at Katsu, please pass it along this way.)

Next time, more from Katsucon, what's new with PMC, Jason David Frank's badassery dissected and the peanut gallery discusses ABC's Mighty Morphin' Power Reruns.

Edit: We did take the episode offline briefly to address a tech issue a little while ago. It is back up and working now.

Rangercast Episode 148: It's A Trap!

Tyler, back from London, finally got around to editing and recording another episode with the gang. Sorry for the delay -- real life is a pain.

Today's panel: Tyler, Tom M, Chris, Jesse "SirStack" Herndon

Chris and Jesse talk Power Morphicon. No, the Silver Ranger membership's late release was not a ploy.

How has the "reversioning" of MMPR been going? And why you should pay attention to this Twitter page.

Also, we're pleased to announce Rangercast will have a "live" (for the people there, not for people on this site) recording at Katsucon next weekend in National Harbor, Md. Come on down!

Rangercast Episode 147: Zordon Shot First

This is not a repeat from 1993.

Well, actually, it is. Today marked the premiere (?) of the "reversioning" (as Disney calls it) of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. BANG WHOOSH KAZAAM POW!! Or something like that.

The big questions: Is it any good? And will it work?

Tyler tackles the big questions in this short episode of Rangercast. Why the rush? He has a plane to catch, so no episodes until at least January 21. See you when we come back!

Rangercast Episode 146: Cogito Ergo Sum

Well, ladies and gents, this is it. The series finale of Power Rangers as we know it. RPM has been great fun, but it's time to break it down. Tonight an overloaded crew (Tyler, Chris, Ryland, Tom C, Tom M, Evan and Darrin) run down the finale, "Danger and Destiny" and how RPM holds up as a whole in the Hall of Legends, as it were. Naturally, there was a lot to talk about. Our chat, recorded Sunday night, went long. Way long. Like two-plus hours. So not everybody could even stick with us the entire time. Maybe it's for the best. Otherwise we might still be recording.

Also, rampant fan conjecture needs to stop. Seriously.

We also have three voicemails from our listeners about what MMPR means to them. Thanks to those who sent in their thoughts.

On Saturday, Tyler will be doing a solo show before he jets off to London breaking down the basics of the remastered MMPR episodes "Day of the Dumpster" and "High Five." So keep an eye out for that. Unless, of course, Tyler gets a control tower dropped on him. That seems to happen every now and then.

Reports of this site's impending death have been greatly exaggerated. We've got some awesome stuff in 2010, but a lot of it involves events, plane tickets of even just some lines of code here and there, so there's not much to really talk about just yet. We can assure you we're not going anywhere. Have a happy and safe New Year from all of us at Rangercast!

Rangercast Episode 145: Venting Our Frustrations

Tyler, Tom M. and Darrin take on the Kamen Rider Dragon Knight finale. Not because we want to. Rather, because it is our solemn duty. Where did this promising show go wrong? Find out.

Also, summaries for MMPRv2 are hitting online listing sites and cable systems. But some stations, like Baltimore's WMAR, are convinced they're airing Jungle Fury. God, no.

And in less than 48 hours (depending on where you are), the series finale of Power Rangers is set to air. Prepare for some awesome.

Rangercast Episode 144: Knight and Day

Two new episodes of Power Rangers RPM ("If Venjix Won" and "End Game") come and save us from Kamen Rider Dragon Knight and remind us what it's like to have shows that don't suck. Tyler, Ryland, Tom C, Darrin and Eric (MegaRyu124x) talk about what went right, what went wrong and what just didn't make a whole lot of sense.

As for Dragon Knight, we'll have a full breakdown (there's a fitting word if I've ever heard one) of the show's thrilling conclusion next time on Rangercast. Ugh. Tom M. spent his weekend watching the whole show marathon-style. He'll try to bust out of his strait jacket long enough to join us.

Rangercast Episode 143: Kamen and Going

Tyler and Tom M. riff on the canning of Kamen Rider Dragon Knight, leaving two episodes unaired and hundreds of fans going into full-on WHAARBARGL mode. What does it mean for Toku in the US? Does it mean anything? And why is Adness bothering to pretend things are all well and good? In any case, recent episodes are doing KRDK no favors. Oh, and if you want to dress up as a Karshian for Halloween, you can get a mask at any Halloween store. It the generic alien one. Yeeaaahhh.

Also, RPM is coming back after a 10 week break to air its final four episodes. Yeah, Power Rangers RPM. Remember that show? I hear it was kind of good and stuff.

And leave your well wishes for Chris. He's been going through some rough times lately. That's why he hasn't been on much.

Ooh, also, Tyler just got an official invite to Balticon 44. So you'll be hearing some more about that soon...

Rangercast Episode 142: Null the Void

Tyler and the Toms spend 40 minutes of your precious time shooting the
breeze and riffing on the news during The Great Break. Today's slim
pickings:

-Power Morphicon 2: This Time It's Personal. Dates are up. See you in Pasadena!
- Tyler's going to London in January, so somebody will be around keeping the fires burning.
-We have a schedule
for MMPRv2. There are some big time spoilers circulating for this new
season, but we believe none of them. Like that one about the floating
head... that's so '90s...
-More toys are floating to stores for the holiday season. But with the good comes the bad. Does this look like a Dragon Dagger to you?
-Kamen Rider Dragon Knight is still terrible in ways few shows dare to attempt. They're in a race to the bottom to make their own plot irrelevant. But at least the game looks fun.

What does MMPR mean to you as the remasters come closer to airing? Call
in and let us know -- your answers might be played on an upcoming
episode. Also, we're planning some cool things for Rangercast in the
future. If you have ideas, show topics or cons you want to see us do a
live show at (we're penciling in two already), drop us a line.

Rangercast Episode 141: Ages Like A Fine Whine

Four typical average Rangercast hosts (Tyler, Chris, Tom C, Tom M) turn back the clock ten years and review the first three episodes of "Big Bad Beetleborgs." It didn't age well. At all. We plan to keep this going, so keep the therapists at the ready.

Also, "Kamen Rider Dragon Knight" got hardcore. They killed -- excuse me -- vented Kit Taylor and brought in The Chairman to straighten things out with his Retcon Rider powers. And New toys are hitting your local Wal-Mart. Must get Lord Zedd...

Finally, disregard the K7 line we mention at the end of every episode.
Interview with John Tellegen

John Tellegen, a longtime writer for Power Rangers, agreed to do an e-mail interview with us, since timing and whatnot wouldn't allow him to actually have a phone chat on the show. Tellegen started out on the show as a writer's assistant with Ninja Storm, started writing episodes with the widely-enjoyed "Shane's Karma" two-parter and the rest from there was history. Tellegen stayed with the show for seven seasons. Enjoy!

How did you first end up writing for Power Rangers?

I wrote a feature film that Doug Sloan read. From there he hired me as the writer's assistant for Ninja Storm. I pitched the story for "Shane's Karma" and the rest is history. Doug is still a good friend of mine, and a great guy. He launched my career.

As someone with one of the longest tenures on the writing staff, what appealed to you about writing it?

As any writer will tell you, your first paid writing gig is the hardest to land. I was very excited for the opportunity. I think the best thing about Rangers is the fact that almost anything can happen - it's fantasy. A format like Rangers opens all the doors of possibility.

Inversely, what do you think about the show and its writing appeals to others?

I can only guess, but it seems to me that Rangers in some way helped spark the "superhero" craze that we are living in now. For many kids, Power Rangers is their entry point. Beyond that, who knows what makes anything a hit.

Jackie and Greg had mentioned the production staff weren't allowed furniture during the Kalish years, to encourage activity rather than sitting around. Did the writer's room finally get chairs after Bruce left?

Not sure - I never heard that. But I can say that I always had a chair of some sort. Did Bruce ever confirm this? Funny.

What was your favorite episode to write?

Jeez, I wrote close to 50 and helped (as we all did) on countless others. Over the years, the tone changed because of different showrunners and notes from Disney (make it funnier, now it's too funny, make it scarier, now make it more exciting, wait, why isn't it funny anymore?)... Even though it wasn't well received by many on RB, the first draft of Ocean Alert was hilarious and a blast to write. I even stuck a review on my refrigerator that referred to me as "Craptacular" -- It's become part of my lexicon.

What was your favorite episode you didn't write?

I wrote an episode of RPM that never made it to camera. It was a heartfelt Flynn story. There were a few reasons why it was hijacked - I don't want to get into specifics - but it's unfortunate. You guys would have liked it.

Saban PR would often continue a cast or seasonal premise and adapt the next Sentai as a continuation. If you could have continued a cast or seasonal premise beyond its source footage, which one would you have picked?

Interesting question. When you do a new season every year with new characters etc., you run over some of the same ground - the first episodes are spent meeting the characters, getting them powers, setting up the premise, etc. It's hard though to bridge seasons because the source footage could go from dinosaurs to space - not impossible, but tricky. I think my favorite cast was the Ninja Storm crew - though I liked SPD a lot as well. I thought it would be cool to do a whole season using our favorite actors/characters from the previous seasons. Almost like a dream team season. Never happened.

Were there even discussions about adapting Shinkenger, or was the
writing always on the wall for the entire year?

The writing was on the wall every year! Then we would get the word that we were doing another season. We never knew until the last hour. Always remember that the fate of our favorite shows on any network rests on a spreadsheet on the desk of a businessman or woman in an office we will never see. You just keep working until the axe falls.

On Location @ Anime Expo VIDEO Part II: The Experience

Yes, we know this is nearly three months after the fact. Stop mocking me.

In Part II of On Location, we have clips of the panels, costumes and odd moments culled from our more than six hours of footage.

Real life kept Tyler from editing this as fast as he would like. So Shamus "Rider Jetfire" Kelley swooped in kind of like Batman and finished it in time for Tigercon. The Tigercon panel didn't quite go as planned, but it went and you'll hear about that next time. Enjoy!

Rangercast Episode 137: Gemma In The Rough

So one of our own, Gemma Lascio, was on an episode of MTV's "True Life" yesterday. I'm sure you can find the whole episode with just a bit of YouTube browsing.

In this episode of Rangercast, Chris, Eric, Tom and Tyler chat with Gemma about the experience of doing the episode and what got edited out. (Hint: A lot.)

Also, in a shocking turn of events, Tyler is funny. Be ready, ladies and gentlemen.

Next time: The crew kept recording long into the night and talked about "And... Action," "Ancient History," the newest KRDK and the latest news.

Alternate titles for this episode: OHMYGODHOWMUCHISTHAT, Just A Friend

(And if Chris sounds different, it's because he's with us by phone.)

Rangercast Episode 136: Feeling Decadent

Blah blah blah, excuses excuses, yeah I know. But between connection issues at home and big things
happening in work, school and real life in general. I certainly
apologize for the delay and will try not to let it happen like this
again.

Tonight, Tyler, Ryland, Tom and Hayden talk about "Not So
Simple," "The Dome Dolls" and what's up with Dragon Knight. And yes, we
know "And....Action" happened. It just happened after we recorded this.
See above. That, and does it really count as an episode anyway? There's
a question for the panel!

Also, Kamen Rider Decade ended, in the
loosest possible sense of the word, as Double began. Look for Tyler and
Gemma somewhere in MTV's "True Life: I'm a Fanboy," airing 9/19 at 4 PM
(not 1 PM as we thought before recording). Also, Hayden tells us a
little about his involvement with the NO H8 Campaign and working with ranger actors and crew members to make a difference.

Finally, a reminder: Tyler and Tom will be at Tigercon on Saturday,
9/26. There will be a Rangercast live panel. You have been warned.

So the Parsec Awards were tonight. About ten minutes before I went to write this, they read the Speculative Fiction News winner, which was not us (though congrats to (Cool) Shite on the Tube). But you know what, I was downright flattered that we made it as finalists.

So for you, now, I'm giving you guys what apparently put us there. Enjoy. As for the next actual episode of Rangercast, we ran into some issues on our end. Hang in there. The pain will be over before you know it.

Rangercast Episode 135: An Evening With Kerrigan Mahan

Congratulations to all who guessed this.

We sat down for a long chat with Kerrigan Mahan, the voice behind memorable characters like MMPR's Goldar, PRLG's Magna Defender and VR Troopers' Jeb. He talks about how he got into the business, some of the realities of the voice acting industry, what he's been up to lately and how he once used Goldar to get out of a moving violation.

While this interview is edited for sense and shenanigans, we did not edit the profanity out, because otherwise, the final result would be something like Morse code. That's why this file is labeled explicit on iTunes. Get the kiddies out of the room.

Oh, and in an interesting twist, when looking up his appearance on The Incredible Hulk,

Rangercast Episode 133: Rye-Ookey

Making up for the gap with a double-length episode! Yeah! Translation: Tyler couldn't get Part 1 edited in time to put out as its own thing, so we decided to roll in the second part and make it all one episode. Yee-haw!

In the first half, we talk about Dragon Knight's weaksauce comeback and the final episode of Eddie Guzelian's run on RPM. Also, the episode synopses for upcoming episodes of RPM continue to be lame.

In the second half, we break down "Three's a Crowd" (RPM) and "The Power of Three" (KRDK). To some people out there, it seems what Eddie did and Judd does can be good or bad depending on who did them. Yay double standards.

New guests at Power Morphicon: Matt Austin, Chris Violette, Vernon Wells and Danny Wayne Stallcup.
Rangercast Episode 132: OL@Otakon 2009 Part II (Tom Caswell Is Dead To Me)

In which Tyler, Tom and Darrin talk about what went down at America's second-largest (and first bestest) anime convention and Tyler and Darrin criticize Tom for being a major tool and, as the title suggests, dead to us. Listen in for special cameos from Gerald Rathkolb and Clarissa Graffeo from Anime World Order and for some audio from the Bandai Entertainment panel with news that, if you're a toku fan, may be relevant to your interests (no, no shows getting licensed, sorry).

We also break down the news:
-Nothing happened at the Dragon Knight panel at Comic-Con. And the one thing they "announced" about new episodes coming in the fall was wrong. As of this post, new episodes are 12 hours away. Fail.
-New RPM synopses. Yeah, behind the scenes episodes are all well and good, but not when they count towards our 32. Another episode is a goofy Sentai rip, one that shouldn't be. Judd Lynn, why have you forsaken us?

And this news broke after we recorded: Walter Jones was arrested in Alabama ostensibly on a DUI. But it turns out, well, it's Alabama. And Walter was stone-cold sober. Our thoughts go out to him and we hope that cop gets it.

Programming note: There will be, assuming all pans out, a live Rangercast at Tigercon on September 26. Be there.

Rangercast Episode 131: On Location @ Otakon 2009 (Part I- Instant Replay)

Rangercast made the list of finalists for the 2009 Parsec Awards. We're not going to be at Dragon*Con, but if you're going, check out the ceremony!

After a week of sleep, food, errands and YouTube-powered procrastination, Tyler finally got to work on Otakon stuff.

Anyway, this is part 1 of our Otakon audio. Part 2 is a bit of the Bandai panel, random hijinks and your Rangercast crew talking about what went down. And here are our awesome photos taken by our awesome photographer (read: Tyler).

Here are some timecodes to make your life easier:

12:05- Tony talks about getting involved with Saban

14:27- How does Tony like Kamen Rider Dragon Knight? Funny story that. He likes it.... aaaand he worked on the game.

19:25- A fan asks a question about MMPR DVD's, which got spun into an answer you probably already know by now...

22:45- A fan asks a voice credit question about PR and Tony starts talking Wizard of Deception. He wasn't just the voice, turns out. The man was busy.

26:20- Tony talks about his thoughts about Sentai and Kamen Rider.

29:38- What was Tony's favorite episode to write? You won't be surprised.

36:52- If Tony were a Ranger, which one would he be?

44:00- What were the differences between working on the movie and working on the TV show?

52:30- Mr. "Two Quick Questions" asks about working with Thuy Trang and how Amy Jo Johnson pretends PR never happened.

We say pick it up, because it's RPM.

Meanwhile, the show's ratings hit rock bottom, the lowest point on ABC Kids ever.
I don't know why, but the last two good titles I've been able to come up with are inspired by recently-deceased celebrities. Meh.

Here come the audio interviews from Anime Expo. Enjoy! For your convenience, here are timecodes to jump to your favorite clip.

2:07- Cerina Vincent, Reggie Rolle and Amy Rolle talk about doing their own stunts and hosting slumber parties
9:07- Babara Goodson talks about how she got cast, fired then rehired as Rita Repulsa and some of the strange ways she's been recognized.
19:21- Nakia Burrise talks about what it was like joining a show very much in progress and what she's working on these days.
22:39- Roger and Blake talk about fan feedback and how they reacted when they first got cast.
27:10- Patricia Ja Lee talks about how her Ranger days prepped her for Resident Evil 5 as some dude tries to sell us ice cream.
31:27- Dan Southworth shares stories and talks about how his days in the suit made him a better Ranger actor out of it.

Coming soon: Part 3- The Experience and Rangercast On Location video from the con, including more interviews. Oh yes.

Coming this weekend: Rangercast Episode 130, featuring episode discussion for "In or Out" and "Prisoners." Meanwhile, three of your favorite Rangercasters will be partying at Otakon!
Rangercast Episode 128: On Location at Anime Expo (Part I- But Wait... There's More!)

Tyler's all back and recovered from Anime Expo. Slowly but surely, he's digging through the audio and video from the crazy weekend. Between work and class and other obligations, this may take a bit. And with Otakon looming in the distance, you won't be able to complain of a dead feed for a good long while.

So the first part of our three part Anime Expo coverage is high-quality audio from the Saturday afternoon panel with the guests. Yes, that's right. All 13 of them. You hear the awkward questions, the laughs and Barbara Goodson stepping into the old Rita voice like a comfortable pair of screechy shoes. Not included is the second part of the panel, geared towards the villains. We made a judgment that the audio wasn't high-quality enough (behind the scenes issues) and the content of the panel just wasn't significant enough to post. It went a little like this (skip to 1:05) only with more "Can you say this?," awkward pauses and even more awkward questions.

Coming soon are interviews with the guests and some of the crazy fandom antics you've come to know and love... I think. Also, video. Good video. When it's edited, we'll let you know.

We also have some awesome photos up, right over here.

Rangercast Episode 127': Blunder Twin Powers, Activate

Tyler, Tom, Ryland and -- for the first time in 50 episodes -- Lisa J take on "Ghosts." The Sentai-burning Gold and Silver intro episode leaves us minus one dumb van and plus two really annoying rangers. You win some, you lose some. Then we launch into a variety of random topics:

-We read synopses of the next round of RPM episodes
-Kamen Rider and logic and their sick, twisted relationship. Also, why Masked Rider was so messed up.
-The RPM vol. 1 DVD hits July 7. Don't be a dirty pirate like Tom. Support the last season.
-Anime Expo is a hair over a week from now. The schedule is up. Let's do this.
-And Brandon MacLaren had to cancel. The SPD Red Ranger, again, had work. And good on him. Besides him, Amy Jo Johnson and Skylar Deleon (Day-lee-on? Or Dee-lee-ohn? Will we ever know), not many PR stars (or fake ones) have shaken the apparent curse.

With the next RPM episode airing *during* Anime Expo, his will be it from us until after the con. Look for Tyler there Thursday through Saturday. If you will be there and have audio/video/photo equipment that you know how to use and wish to help Tyler out, email us. See you at the con!

And speaking of cons, in the time between when this episode was recorded and when it was posted, Power Morphicon 2 was officially announced. Now, we would be lying if we said we didn't have our little birdies out there, but it's reassuring to finally see an official announcement.

And no, the apostrophe in the title is not a typo.

Rangercast Episode 126: Going Viral

Chris "Cmdr Crayfish" Funaro makes his triumphant return to Rangercast, by popular demand.

Chris, Tyler, Tom and Darrin break down some recent Toku news, including the upcoming Kamen Rider Double and Tsuburaya shopping around Ultraman. Can we haz decent DVDs first?

Next, we break down "Embodied," and we brought our A-Game. What is Venjix doing? Why does Col. Truman not care? Why do the Rangers not mind that Doctor K screwed them all over? Why are Gem and Gemma...existing? Who are you people? AND WHERE IS MY HORSE?!

Also, Rangercast is confirmed to hit Anime Expo in a couple weeks. Send in your questions for the PR guests and we'll try to get them answered.

Finalle, between editing and posting, we got an email from the Parsec Awards. We've been nominated for Parsecs in Best Fan Podcast and Best Speculative Fiction podcast. Wish us luck.

Rangercast Episode 125: Ding

So there was a Fancasts panel back at Balticon. If you didn't know that, you're in good company -- the audience was two, three people at peak. It was 11 PM on a Sunday, so we could have seen it coming, but yet we soldiered on with the mixer and recorder running.

I had the pleasure to share the stage... or dining-room-style table, as it were, in the Chesapeake Suite with Ted and Michele White of Galactica Quorum, Billy Flynn from Geek Radio Daily and MA from Fanboy Hell. We talk shop. How did we get to doing what we do? What have been our personal crowning moments of awesome? What do we do when our target show (be it Battlestar Galactica or, well, Power Rangers) ends? Do all of us have awesome British fans? Find out!

And of course, huge props to Paul Fischer for pulling all of this programming at Balticon together and to the engineer who let me pull the audio data off their computer a the end. We will make an effort to do a live Rangercast next year, so stay tuned.

Also, back by popular demand, it's Rangerboard Masterpiece Theatre! In this installment, GreenRangerPower, a RB member since 2003 with more than 71,000 posts to his name, suddenly wonders why we do what we do. Were it not the policy for RBMT to use only posts made since the last episode, this guy would have given us enough material in a week to last us a year.

Back to your regularly scheduled Rangercast next week. Now off to watch some Shinkenger.

Rangercast Episode 124: She Blinded Me With Science

Tyler, Ry, Gemma, Darrin and (later in) Tom peruse the responses to the Rangercast survey linked in 123's show notes. If you haven't taken it yet, please go ahead and let us pick your brains. Some of the responses were amusing. Some insightful. Then there was apparently a response from George Rodd or a skilled imitator. I'm sorry, Ben 10 and Mystic Force just are not a proper combination for our podcast. It's like ice cream and... hmm... Old Bay, to use a Baltimore classic. Yeah, ice cream and Old Bay. Separately they're delicious. But I'd never put Old Bay on my ice cream. I'm sure some people do, though.

Then it's on to episode discussion. "Brother's Keeper" kicks off a few RPM-free weeks. Some people thought it would be about Gem and Gemma. Some people thought it would be about Scott and Marcus. All of them were wrong, as it turned out to chronicle the budding bromance between Scott and Dillon, handcuffing them together and making every slash fanfic writer squeal in glee. Meanwhile, Doctor K talks out of a thesaurus. And Ziggy always seems to know what happens next. It's like he watches the show or something.

And don't worry, dear listeners. We have things to keep you busy during the brief RPM hiatus. We have our ways.

Rangercast Episode 123: On Location @ Katsucon 2009... kinda (Featuring Tony Oliver)

A certain host and producer is detained at Balticon in Hunt Valley, Md., hanging out with podcasting friends like Tee Morris, Paul Fischer and Cthulhu. So from the archives, we bring you this panel with Tony Oliver at Katsucon from back in February.

Yes, at one point we promised you a full Katsucon show. But the fact of the matter is that very little relevant to this show happened. And also the MacBook used to produce this show broke on the way home. It hit the pavement outside the Metro station in Greenbelt. Funny story, that. Anyway, that's probably a sign of some deity that a Katsucon show simply is not meant to be. Of course, we've spoken with Tony before, but this panel offers some morsels of new insights buried within as Tony educates the unwashed masses.

To refresh your memory of the con that was, here are the photos from the con.

Next week, we take on Brother's Keeper and then no new episode of RPM until 6/13. Hopefully we'll find something to entertain you.

And yes, I am working on getting to Anime Expo. Plane plans, check. Lodging, check. Money... plastic. Time off work? Er, I hope? Like the bumper at the beginning of this show said, a little help would rock. I'm not begging. But hey, if you like us, definitely kick in a few bucks to help us keep doing what we're doing and help fund crazy trips like AX.

Also, if you're an avid listener of RC, or even if you're just jumping aboard, we want to pick your brains. Click HERE to take a quick survey. Thanks a bunch!

(And if you're joining because you grabbed the Rangercast flyer at Balticon or heard me talk about it at a panel, welcome. Check out our archives for added listening pleasure!)

So, yeah, Anime Expo...

Via Anime Expo's official site, the PR representation at AX just got crazier. As you read this, Tyler is working on ways to get out there, and most certainly will try. It's not going to be easy and it's not going to be cheap. Airfare will run about $300. Supplies, hotel, etc. drive things up. If you'd like to join the fight to get Rangercast On Location @ Anime Expo, donate a dollar or two with that nifty little Paypal button up there in the corner. We don't ask much. We'd love you for it.

Rangercast Episode 122: The Eyes Have It

The crew tackles "Doctor K" and "Blitz." Twin tropes and helmet shots piss us off, but emo backstories are good times. And is Venjix THE Venjix? Did "Doctor K" seal the deal on that? Are you tired of the debate? Also, Tyler makes terrible horse puns and Impy wishes to remind you that the horse porn store is closed. Sorry, horse porn fans.

In other news, Tyler and Mike's Otakon panel got rejected, along with panels by a lot of other awesome people, which kind of sucks. But hey, that's life, and either way, it'll be fun.

Speaking of cons, if you're in the area, drop by Balticon this weekend for Tyler talking about podcasting and other fun stuff. And also Calls for Cthulhu. That guy rocks.

Our interviews got kind of washed out due to time constraints, but we figure we've heard from Psychic Lover and Unicorn Table before, at least.

What you're about to hear is Tyler and Gemma talking about what happened and the awesome stuff, some of which we can't talk too much about, which is why this episode is so darn short. Ah well.

Also, here are pictures. The album is now updated with pictures of Psychic Lover, Unicorn Table and some fat, balding podcaster, all courtesy of Gemma Lascio. Thanks Gemma.

Sorry this episode is coming so late. Between scheduling issues and exams, it was just hard to make happen then find the time to edit it all. Episode 122 should (cross your fingers) be recording tonight, so there's that.

Yeah, we know we move fast.

Anywho, back to your regularly scheduled Rangercast. Tyler, Ry, Darrin, Hayhay and Tom start out by chatting about the PRRPM DVD's. God we hope they sell well, because we finally want to buy them. Also, we talk about "Ranger Yellow" a two-parter that Tyler hates more than Ryland. It's true! Then on to the significantly better "Ranger Blue," which wishes to subtly remind you that Flynn is Scottish. Well huh. Who could've guessed?

Also, Tyler will be at Balticon May 22-25 doing some panels. Also, why are fans stupid?

Meanwhile, in Dragon Knight land, "Xaviax's Promise" as one of the most heavily-hyped episodes of the season on a certain message board.
Rangercast Episode 116: M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E

The big news? No more fund drives. No more begging and pleading. No more auctions.

In a quite magnanimous gesture, The Walt Disney Company has offered to invest in the show to the tune of an amount I cannot disclose (It has a lot of zeroes but isn't zero). But don't worry! We'll still be the independent source for PR commentary and wisecracks you've come to know and love.

Tonight on Disney's Rangercast?

-Disney announces plans to bring the monsters of Angel Grove to Disneyland.
-We rehash "Handshake," a truly stunning bit of social commentary. Nothing goes deeper than comments about hair and cars and Addams Family references.
-We tear apart the new Kamen Rider Dragon Knight episode thingy. What awful morals to be teaching kids. Motorcycles aren't safe. Sunglasses aren't cool. And trying to take over the world is so 20th century.

Tonight's panelists: Tyler, <strike>Chris, Ryland,</strike> Tom, Hayden (whose horseback lessons are going well, thanks for asking)

Finally, Disney's Rangercast is pleased to unveil our new forums! Post away!

Rangercast Episode 115: The Sky is (still) Falling

Occurred to me that I had used this episode title before. So the sky is not just falling. It's STILL falling. Panelists (seriously almost just typed Pantalists...dunno why): Tyler, Ryland, Darrin, Tom

-Rangerboard is going down 1/1/10, if RPM is really the end. Who will fill the void left by the taco-hungry webmaster?
-So after Eddie Guzelian, some actors and the New Zealand Herald were all like "Yeah, PR's canceled," Bandai's all like LOLWUT.
-Episode discussion: "Go for the Green." We, again, approve.
-Dragon Knight: If that kid really had asthma, he'd be dead by now.

Also, we have some *big* Rangercast news for next time. Stay tuned...

It occurred to me earlier this week that there hasn't been a new RC promo in like a year and a half. So I wrote one up and did it.
Rangercast Episode 114: A Dry Rain

Panelists: Tyler, Ryland, Hayden and our new guy, Tom (MysticSentai). He's British and a cool dude.

We dissect the third episode of RPM, "Rain." It's a magical rain that gets nobody wet. Also, Dillon wants to remind you he's a badass with the power to tear grunts apart, but only when the camera isn't looking.

Tyler contacted Disney's press people and got a "no comment" on PR's impending doom. Yes, Chicken Little, the sky is falling.

Oh yeah, and Akiba Fest is in two weeks. Tyler will be there. Will you?

Rangercast Episode 113: The Bittersweet Symphony

So yeah, RPM. Duuuuuuude. It feels good to not hate my favorite show. This is something I haven't felt in like four years. It's weird. Anyway, Tyler, Chris, Darrin, Ry and Hayhay talk up "The Road to Corinth" and "Fade to Black."

And is it the beginning of the end for PR?

(This post was typed while thinking in a Scottish/Australian accent. Thanks Flynn!)

Also, we forgot to mention it in the episode, but this kid is just so unintentionally hilarious.
Sweet Sorrow: Power Rangers canned

From the New Zealand Herald (via Rangerboard) comes word that PR is canceled. Granted, the article contains a fair bit of Cowboy BeBop At His Computer, but it appears to be the real deal.

Seventeen years, 700-some episodes is a good run for any show. Now, the desperate among us may wonder if this is just the end of Ranger Productions and the NZ era. That may very well be the case, but prepare for these 32 episodes of RPM to be the last hurrah for a while.

And speaking of which, talk about timing. RPM premieres in Eastern time in about five hours. All this and more in Rangercast Episode 113: The Bittersweet Symphony, coming soon to a podcast feed near you.

The first of what will likely be many car-pun titles for RC this year. Tonight's crew: Tyler, Ry, Darrin

-Eddie Guzelian hopped on Bentaboard to cover himself.
-PR is ending? Is the sky falling?
-The Silver RPM Ranger's name is Gemma. Lulz.
-Disney finally admits RPM exists. The premiere is a mere two days away. Are you ready?
-Dragon Knight? Getting better.
The repair place said I should have my precious lappy back <strike>tomorrow-ish</strike> Saturday?....Sunday? Ergo, I'm going to be auctioning off some of my stuff in the near future to help the cause. And because I'm not a total money-grubbing ass, a portion of the proceeds will be directed to WTMD, a Towson, Md.-based public (and online!) radio station.
Rangercast Episode 109: While You Were Out

Rangercast returns from a loooooong break. Tonight's panel? Tyler, Ryland, Darrin, Mike Manos and newcomer Evan (Elk).

-Tyler talks about his awesome trip to Japan. Check out his pictures here!
-In the few weeks we've been gone, news has actually happened with RPM. Not quite what we wanted to hear though, as Disney reps confirm that the show will not be making the leap to the almost mind-blowingly demographic-fitting Disney XD, instead airing only on ABC Kids. Hold on... what?

-The new Executive Producer... who was sacked halfway through RPM has such illustrious credits as "American Dragon: Jake Long," "Fillmore" and "The Tigger Movie." Process that for a moment. One of the minds behind "The Tigger Movie" was reportedly fired for making RPM too dark. This doesn't compute.

-The first four episodes of Kamen Rider Dragon Knight aired while we were gone. Bad acting, good action, good story... but if a show airs and nobody watches it, does it make a sound? Reruns of Jungle Fury on ABC Kids are reportedly beating it in the ratings. It's one thing to get beaten. But by Jungle Fury?

-Kamen Rider Decade is pretty. And pretty badass.

-Shinkenger? Promising, but not for PR.

Dedicated to the memory of Richard Genelle (1961-2008). Heaven now has an awesome juice bar.

Rangercast Episode 108: The Lovable Trainwreck

In memory of The Box (2007-2008). May you make hundreds of newspapers in your next life.

The second half of the year-end stuff comes...er...three days after New Year's. Sorry, a certain webmaster/host/audio editor had a family emergency. We may be a day or three late, but not a dollar short. Tyler, Chris, Ry and Gemma gather 'round to reminisce and stuff....

-Ooh, new KRDK figures and PRSL stuff. Problem is, a couple of RPM rangers are being packaged as Super Legends. Is Bandai counting their chickens before they morph?
-We talk about our favorite Rangercast moments of 2008.
-Tyler's planning to take lots of pictures in Tokyo as you read this.
-Impy still hates the G-12 and can't stop calling it Go-on-GUR.
-Gemma needs her Japanese man porn.

So we miscalculated. This will be the last episode we record before Tyler goes on his merry way to the Land of the Rising Sun.

Finally, we're free of four word titles!

Tyler, Gemma, Chris and Ry are back after a far too long break to catch up on old news.

-New Super Legends figures? Titanium Ranger? Oh hell yes.
-So that Jungle Fury. How about that Jungle Fury? I hear they had a finale and stuff.
-What do we want to see in RPM (or as Impy hereby dubs it, Power Rangers Rarpem)?
-What's coming down the pipe in new Toku?
-Kamen Rider Dragon Knight had not yet had its sneak preview screening when we recorded this. So we talk about what we want to see in it. It aired Saturday and wasn't half bad. More on that next time.
-For Henshin Justice Masterpiece Theatre, Impy recites a *brilliant* piece of fiction accompanying Keith's EXCLUSIVE interview with KRDK head writer Nathan Long. We giggle like preteens as Ry reads it in his best James Lipton voice.

Also, coming up in Rangercast On Location....
-JAPAN! Tyler's flying out to the Land of the Rising Sun for a week next month. No, he won't do your shopping for you, but -- even better -- he *will* have his recorder on him as he explores Akihabara.
-KATSUCON! Tyler returns to the epic DC con.
-AKIBA FEST! It's back. Tyler's heard things about what they're planning for this April, but his lips are sealed. Edit: They just updated their website. Psychic Lover and Unicorn Table are BACK with special guests Sister MAYO (Magiranger) and Takayoshi Tanimoto (Gekiranger) from Project.R. Go-onger theme, I hears it.

Also, if you were one of the winners of the cancer raffle ages ago, I lost your addresses, so email us ASAP. Thanks, mgmt.

Rangercast Episode 104: An Interview With Greg Aronowitz (Part 1)

Tyler, Chris, and Ryland spent their Halloween on the phone with Greg
Aronowitz, Executive Producer/Writer/Director/Sculptor..../Caterer(?)
for Power Rangers: SPD. He sat down with us for two hours. Two awesome
hours. Here's the first half of that chat. We talk about things like...

-Isinia Cruger....huh?
-wearing lots of hats
-Greg's new movie, Battle Planet (premiering Sunday night... tonight as I post this... on Sci-Fi)
-How you enter a universe with 500+ episodes under its belt
-working with the Dekaranger aesthetic
-SPD actors as his good luck charm
-And MORE!

(Also, a super-special guest makes a cameo appearance in this episode...see if you spot him.)

Rangercast Episode 103: Going Through The Motions

Tyler, Gemma, and Ryland discuss the new RPM themes (to the extent that...they exist) and talk up the last few Jungle Fury episodes: The Spirit of Kindness, Maryl and the Monkeys, and To Earn Your Stripes, in chronological order and, as it happens, from most sucky to least sucky. The strike episodes are over, that's the good news. The bad news? The season is almost over. Damn it.

Yes, we know certain people put the Jungle Fury finale online somewhere already. We'll be talking about it in RC105. What's RC104, you ask? We have a very special guest with us. Who? You'll just have to find out. And unlike this episode, we can guarantee the wait will be less than two or three weeks (yeah, sorry about the delay in getting a new ep to the masses).

Oh, and Tigercon this weekend. Tyler is there. He's staffing, but he's there, and running a panel. Drop by and say what's up.

Rangercast Episode 102: Don't Blow That Clipshow

Special guest Darrin joins us from behind the Great Firewall of China. Don't mind the static. It's probably just a wiretap or something...

Tonight on Rangercast, we break down "Don't Blow That Dough," and "Tigers Fall, Lions Rise." One is quite possibly the worst clipshow ever, and makes us miss Lothor's cunning plans. The other...well, it's a Casey episode. Need we see more?

A bunch of news hit for Power Rangers RPM. We've got casting news and even a synopsis hitting the web. This should be fun.

Also, shoutout to the people at Baltimore Comic-Con who dropped by my little table all the way in the back. And a warm welcome to our new listeners. Again, Rangercast's next con stop is Tigercon, November 1, Towson University. Yee-haw.

Rangercast Episode 101: The Male Bag

With no new episodes until the end of the month, we dig into all the voicemails that we just never ever got around to answering for, like, ever. Shoutouts to Tanuki and TheAvenger121 for calling in.

Also, we have casting news for PRRPM. Well, one actor at least.

We also give a warm welcome to new Rangercast...er...person, I guess, Gemma Lascio (Magiblue2). Say hi Gemma!

This episode was recorded as Tyler turned 20. Really.

Also, if you're in the area, look for Tyler in the artist's alley at Baltimore Comic-Con. Table #69. Yes, really. Tyler will have flyers and hastily-burned DVD's with classic episodes on them. Fun, fun. Tyler will also be at Tigercon this November, but he's staff--blink and you'll miss him. Somewhere in it all, he may find the time to do a panel.

And to the cancer drive winners, your stuff will be on its way next week, after Tyler's payday.

(Oh, and sorry this episode took forever.)

WOOT! Fun times.

Next time, with no episodes to talk about, Rangercast takes a dive into its extensive mailbag backlog.

Edit: If you downloaded this before, download it again.
Rangercast Episode 99: On Location @ Otakon 2008 Part 2 (Where Did My Weekend Go?)

Tyler scrounges together the audio that didn't implode when his recorder failed him to bring an account of the behind-the-scenes hilarity that made Otakon awesome this year. Also appearing here and there. in this episode with Tyler and Mike are Gerald Rathkolb, Daryl Surat, and Kara Dennison. Let's do this.

Oh, and a shoutout to the Japanator crew, who I hung out with a couple times during the con, and who I was with for the EPIC late-night Bandai panel in which memories were made and serafuku were worn.

Big props to Lucas Park, the musician behind Rangercast's brand new opening theme. WOOT.

Here's the only video I really shot at the con. They're reading a letter from Baltimore mayor Sheila Dixon. As both a Charm City native and an otaku, the whole thing just made me laugh my ass off.

Also, here's a Youtube video that man was not meant to see...

Who the hell are those guys up there? >_>

And I leave you with this epic moment of win.

Next time on Rangercast: Episode 100, marking three years of kicking ass. It's gonna be a hell of a party.

Edit: If this episode sounds like it was mixed *really* quiet, I know. I can't for the life of me figure out why, but I think I need to give Garage Band a good kick. Sorry about that.

Rangercast Episode 98: On Location @ Otakon 2008 Part 1- I Love You, Frank Zappa

Yeah, Otakon was AMAZING this year. So amazing, I basically collapsed Monday night when all was said and done from sheer exhaustion. Hence the slight delay in getting this out to you guys. Trust me though, it's worth the wait.

This year, our Otakon coverage is in two parts. In this episode, we have not one, but two celebrity chats. The first is a one-on-one interview with the one and only Tony Oliver. We chat about what's up with his PR documentary, what it was like to hang out with the fandom at Otakon, and what's up with all those Garo rumors.

Then we have some audio from a press conference with EPIC Japanese band JAM Project. Where would you know them from? Lots of places. They made Otakon their US stop on the World Flight 2008 No Border Tour as they rocked 1st Mariner Arena to its core with hot-blooded awesomeness.

Part II is coming soon, complete with the banter of the weekend, a discussion of what happened, and Mazinger Z on ukelele.

And pics? We haz them. Special shoutout to Dan Park, for using his super-special contest-prize third row seat to get us some awesome JAM photos at the concert.

Oh, and notice the donation counter over there? Yeah, you guys are AWESOME. And remember what I said about prizes? Here's what I've got:
PRJF Animalized Red Ranger figure
PROO re-released Mighty Morphin' Red Ranger
Kamen Rider Den-O combo (one Kintaros figure, one Narikiri Set with the belt, DenGasher, a Rider Pass, and a sticker)

Rangercast Episode 97: More Betterer Super Happy Fun Hero Time For Lazy Americans

This episode's so big, we did it in two parts. That and since there's no show next week (Tyler is going to be very busy the next couple weekends), we thought we'd do another part for episode discussion and other stuff that came up. So yeah.

Part I- Tyler, Mike Manos, Mike Dent, and Ryan Tober handle Otakon hype. Er, Tyler and Mike Dent handle Otakon hype, since they're the ones going. We geek out over the schedule. Oh, and there's a Rangerboard gathering for all interested.

Then we talk about Go-Onger, Kiva, and why PLEX makes us want to hurt things. Go-Onger is getting a Mastadon, Triceratops, T-Rex, and a Warrior Wheel clone Go-Roader. Yes, really. Ugh. Oh, and the logical follow up to the G-9, G-12 etc., is the G-Ï.

Kamen Rider Den-O is still chugging along, despite its climax passing long ago (can you tell it's Tyler who's writing these show notes?). And Super 8 Ultra Brothers looks friggin' sweet.

Part II- Tyler, Chris, Ryland, and Darrin deconstruct "Arise the Crystal Eyes." It's really quite tremendously awful. At least next time is the Spirit Rangers, where all is slated to be redeemed.

Then, after some other news, we get serious. Maureen (Ivydraken, of Power Morphicon fame) is planning to put three autographed PMC banners up on eBay for Make-A-Wish Foundation sometime in the next weekish. The problem? There were originally four banners. What happened to the fourth banner? That's a long, mysterious tale.

And again, please donate to the cancer drive. We have prizes. Seriously. As I write this I have two action figures sitting next to me, and one of them (plus another maybe) may be yours. It's for an awesome cause guys!

Off to Otakon next weekend. Wish me luck.

Rangercast Episode 96: Back to the Grind

Tyler discusses why we've been gone. It's been a long couple of weeks.

Rangercast's been nominated for a Parsec Award for Best Fan Podcast. Hooray us.

Tyler, Chris, Ryland, and Darrin review Dash for the Dagger and Race to the Nexus. Scab writers are still horrendously uneven.

And by somebody's request, we talk about what we would want to see in a PR animated series. Continuity is fun.

And for those paying attention, Otakon
is coming up. Tyler's there. Are you? Guests at the con include Tony
Oliver (writer, producer, Saba, PR's real daddy), Derek Stephen Prince
(Auric The Conqueror, Elgar, various MOTD's), Richard Epcar (remember him?), and JAM Project (Garo, an unholy amount of anime, and individually, lots of toku). So yeah, be there.

Also, Rangercast is doing a donation drive. No, not for us. For the American Cancer Society.
Click our Paypal button over on the right and donate away, as much as
you like, until the end of August. Everybody who donates $5 or more
will be entered to win some prizes. So yeah, do it, because cancer
really sucks.

This episode of Rangercast is dedicated to the memory of James Waldman (1953-2008).

Rangercast Episode 95: This Needs More Rhinoblaster

This episode was kind of booted out the door due to personal issues (Tyler is headed out of town for a family emergency...the episode was edited and these show notes were written while Tyler was on a cross-country flight).

We got a voicemail from TheAvenger121 about a comment we made about "No I In Leader." Do the Zordon rules apply to the JF Rangers and Jungle Master Mode or its it just victim to the whims of Sentai footage and arbitrary decisions by writers?

We talk up the latest PRJF episode, "Path of the Rhino." Fran falls in love, Dominic is pretty cool, and Casey still takes it in the face. How did it fare? Well now you'll just have to listen. And somewhere along the way Chris and Ry get sidetracked with Doctor Who and homoeroticism among Kalish-era Red Rangers.

Also, with Rangercast's 100th episode a mere, uh, five episodes away (yay math), we're putting out the call. If you want to send congratulatory messages or just sound off in any way you feel like sounding off, call us up at 206-339-9419 and leave a message, or email us an audio file.

Oh, and we've kind of noticed a shift in what we've been discussing, our statistics, and the number of *active* listeners (commenters, feedback,etc.). So we thought it would be interesting to throw this out there: What do YOU want to hear on Rangercast? Seriously, we don't do this show for our health or for our wallets (Ask Tyler). We do it for your enjoyment. You want more Toku? We can do that. You want Chris and Ry to go on for two hours about their Doctor Who's relevance in the PRU? Uhm, okay, we can do that. So just send us an email and let us know what's up.

Also, as mentioned in the first paragraph, Tyler is currently out of town. While certainly, he's put up episodes from Los Angeles before (*cough*), due to family issues, that is pretty much not gonna happen. Therefore, RC will be taking a break for however long until he gets back to town. But don't worry, we have some kickass stuff planned to make the wait eventually worth it..

So Acen was last weekend in Chicago. It was pretty cool, but due to circumstances beyond my control, much of my Anime Central coverage just...couldn't happen. But I was there, and thanks to the good graces of certain people, it was not a total loss.

So here is the audio from a press conference with Jason David Frank, Steve Cardenas, Karan Ashley, and Robert Axelrod.
Rangercast Episode 85: These Riders Are Uncommon

Tyler, Ryland, and super special snap substitute co-host Darrin (MoonsKnight) tackle some big news and stuff.

Dragon Knight doesn't suck. We discuss (and gush over) the trailer, while Darrin watches it for the very first time.

A source hooked us up with titles, synopses, and writer credits for JF episodes 14-29. Good news: We get the Spirit Rangers. Those crazy toys weren't just Bandai messing with our heads. The bad news? 14-29 are all written under pseudonyms, aftereffects of last year's WGA strike. And aside from a three-episode arc, it's all Sentai rips from here. We proceed to lose hope and abandon ship.

Oh, and new Jungle Fury episode. The Blind Leading the Blind. Does Master Swoop make the episode soar? Or does Theo's training still leave it dead in the water? Tune in and find out.

(Hint: Tyler liked this. Impy hated it. Surprise!)

Oh, and check out the Rangercast page on Facebook, because bandwagoning is fun.

Sorry for the silence. Tyler's been a little busy with school and stuff.

In the news, friend of the show Keith Hayward got into the Kamen Rider Dragon Knight wrap party. Jealousy aside, he walked away with some good stuff and a proclamation that, yes Virginia, it doesn't suck. And what is our favorite cyborg Red Ranger doing on the Go-Onger set?

Tyler, Chris, and Ryland tackle "Pizza Slice of Life," "Way of the Master," and "Good Karma, Bad Karma." Tyler points out the good stuff, while Chris and Ryland drink tall glasses of Haterade. An exhausted Tyler adds little to the discussion.
We mourn the loss of our co-host and friend. Then it's onto some news, as there's so much to talk about.
Rangercast Episode 82: It Could Be Worse

Tyler, Chris, and Impy tackle "Dance the Night Away," then somewhere along the line veer incredibly off-topic. Now, normally Tyler has a principle of editing out profanities from Rangercast--why should a podcast about a show primarily made for a younger audience have such things?--but this episode of Rangercast got so out of hand that Tyler just threw up his hands and gave up on that idea. Ergo, this episode is not for kiddies. Sorry kiddies.

This episode is dedicated to Lawrence Stuckey, chairman of T-Mode, and an all around awesome guy.
Rangercast Episode 81: The Long Downward Spiral

We rehash the unquestionably awful episodes of Jungle Fury we missed. After some armchair quarterbacking, we posit how we would do it better. This should be fun.

Joe "Rofang" Rovang is adapting Jetman. Go read now.

Chris also sings the praises of our friends at Spandex Report, who will more then likely mention that we did so in today's report, setting off a recursive loop of plugging and destroy the universe.
Rangercast Episode 77: We're not recording this...right?

So by the time this hits the feed, Tyler will be at Katsucon. This post therefore was made not via Tyler, but via intarweb magic. So anyway, the original plan was for the feed to go quiet until after this weekend, but after recording episode 76, we ended up shooting the breeze for about an hour after that and then realized we were having fun doing it. So here for your listening pleasure (or displeasure) is the aftermath that came out of it, which is oddly longer than RC76. We don't know how that happened either. Also, we make no claims to the quality of this content. It was late, we were sleepy. And no structure to this one means no shownotes for you. Sorry.

Also, since we recorded this, the WGA strike's officially over! WOO! And the JF press release is out.

OP: Bulk and Skull theme
ED: NS ending

Next time on Rangercast: Katsucon? Finster, and one-time Rangercast guest Robert Axelrod will be
appearing. I love it when a plan comes together.

We got a lengthy email from Phazon Ranger over at Rangertalk that
starts us off on a discussion of the history and dynamics of the PR
fandom and why Rangerboard is *the place* for PR fandom. Chris has done his research.

And Tyler recorded this with a box on his head (hence the pic). Why? Tune in to find out!

OP: Let's Rock 'n' Roll (TAPRM soundtrack)
ED: Not telling you. Somebody references it in the episode, so I went hunting for it. It's part of an old fandom in-joke. If you know, you know. If you don't, there's no hope for you.

Rangercast Episode 74: The Newsless News Show

Big show, little topics. Let's do this.

Tonight's panel: Tyler, Chris, Hayden, Impy

-New JF promos? Irrelevant. Titles? Still pun-worthy.

-Anime Central just announced a round
of PR guests. RC is very much there. And while we're at it, Tyler gives
the tentative list for the 2008 con tour.

-An RB poster recently asked why she was getting emails from (she
presumed) Tyler since the emails mentioned "Rangercast." Tyler explains
what's up with those emails, and why they aren't coming from him.

-Our very own Mike Dent has been credited by at least one person with killing Newtype USA. Go Mike.

-Tyler went to New York City for a Rangerboard meetup. Oh the good
times that were had. Tyler has some audio clips, and reminders why
bowling with a Wiimote is in no way representative of the real thing. Pics? Done.

Lovin' that offseason.

OP: PRTF instrumental
ED: Oh, that's a secret.

That pic there? CoN on a getaway plastic Harley.

Rangercast Episode 73: The Filler Arc

So the first actual, honest-to-God episode title for Jungle Fury is out. Yes, four words. But instead of a whole episode of a) judging books by their covers or b) unleashing Tyler's terrible title puns--though certainly both happen--we decide to go into a lengthy discussion of what makes a good season premiere. With some fun side stories along the way.

Panelists: Tyler (RitoRevolto), Chris Funaro (CmdrCrayfish), Chris Hayden (cyberblue), Aaron (Shyranger)

Then after that, Tyler sits down for an interview with August Ragone, a longtime member of the tokusatsu fandom and the author of the new book Eiji Tsuburaya: Master of Monsters, available now from Chronicle Press. He chats with us about what went into making the book and what toku fandom was like in its infancy. He has so many stories to share, so check it out. Be sure to pick up his book here, and check out reviews here and here. Congrats August! And remember guys, support R1 Toku releases. It's how we get stuff done.

In Rangerboard Masterpiece Theatre, TT Tyler has a deep question about the soul.

Rangercast 2007 Year End Spectacular: The Year of The Hero

Here's a labor of love. We went back into our memory banks for the last 12 months and brought back some awesome memories of the 2007 con tour. But this is no ordinary clipshow. We've got some special guests to talk about some of what went down. For Power Morphicon, we've got Wes Janson, MoonsKnight, Dingo_Ninjetti, bandai1983, along with Chris, Ryland, and Tyler to talk good times and fun stories. For Otakon, Tyler, Mike Dent, and Anime World Order's Gerald Rathkolb reminisce about the concerts, the cosplayers, and the hot chocolate. Oh yes, that was damn good hot chocolate. And it was free. Take that!

Tyler wraps the show with a brief manifesto, in which he thanks people who need to be thanked.

But wait, there's more. Tyler went back, and dug up nearly every back episode of Rangercast, and put them up on the Intarwebs. Missed an ep or two? Wanna relive a moment without wading through Podomatic? Hell, wanna listen to the first episode of RC in its gruesome entirety? Okay...whatever floats your boat. Anyway, here's your torrent.

Also, Tyler finally got his camera up and running again. That means the pics from way back at AUSA are up and running at last. The long national nightmare is over. ^_^ Linkage for teh masses.

Finally, it's not mentioned in the show, but RC has secured at least one, maybe two, three or so special guests for future episodes. Now obviously, no hints can be dropped right now, but I can guarantee you'll be pretty stoked when we have them in here.

Happy holidays to you and yours! See ya in 2008!

Edit 11:05 AM 12/27: New torrent link. If you're trying to use the other one, don't bother. It's broke.
4:14 PM- Intarwebs hate Tyler. Link *should* work. If it doesn't, we'll figure it out.

Tyler got that nifty FiOS service, then discovers Jetix On Demand. But since when has Mystic Force been in demand? A little morsel of KRDK news hits in the form of a casting call on a Japanese website. Poweranimals' magical...erm, source inside the House of Mouse is back, repeating the threat of the animated series and saying Jungle Fury will send the live-action show out with a bang, and we argue about it.

And Matt Austin is looking for five fans to be a part of his documentary, Mor-FAN-ominal. But who among us is worthy? We have some ideas.

And in Rangerboard Masterpiece Theatre, Youtuber Psyga315 is fscking pithed. I'm sure there are pills for that.

OP- Ron Wasserman- Take Them Down
ED- Wild Force demo theme
RBMT- El Mudo- Macarron Chacarron

Oh, and we tried to get him to record this for the show afterwards, but there was no time.

Here's the epic Operation Overdrive Overdrive year-end review show. Yes, that's right. An hour and a half of stuff. That's epic by most standards. Tyler, Mike Manos, Chris, and Impy talk about what the season finale did right, what it did wrong, and the season as a whole. And go remarkably off-topic for half the time. Yee-haw.

Also, because the news happened during editing (while Tyler was away at Anime USA), Tyler has an open letter to Disney regarding the leak of news of plans for 2009's animated series. Send those letters, folks, and we can save the show!

In Rangerboard Masterpiece Theatre, itz_ed has a stern message for Jer.

Saturday and Sunday, let's do this.
2:20- Tyler runs down the Media Blasters panel. Not having viable audio sucks.
3:59- AAA panel rundown and one clip. Yeah, the panel rooms just
are not set up for field recording. Somebody asks them if they're KR
fans. Hehehe. One of them later mentioned owning a KR suit. Oh snap.
7:28- Tyler speaks with Steve Baird again, asks how that therapy's going.
9:35- Tyler shares a story of the Dealer's Room.
10:11- The legendary Purple Tentacle of Otakon has been unmasked.
11:41- Tyler interviews many Anonymii in the 4chan line. Here we go again.
12:51- Right next to the car going down the street blasting the
generic rap track of the moment, Tyler hears another car blasting Hare
Hare Yukai. Yep, welcome to Otakon.
13:30- The sounds of the 4chan line. WHOOOOO!
18:54- Trends in Tokusatsu panel
1:11:33- Tyler discusses the AAA press conference. Autographs 3 was
not a good room for recording. But it was fun. Tyler took some notes.
1:20:17- Mike recounts his guest encounters over lunch and Otakon's final moments.
1:22:19- Tyler does a rundown of how Otakon went on the whole. Wish you were here. August 8-10, 2008. Be there.

Also, buried within the episode, Tyler gets a clue to the current
whereabouts of David Yost, and no, he's not working in a pizza shop.

Check out the Flickr posted in RC58's show notes for all of the photos from the con.

Music used (all from AAA):
Blood on FIRE
Climax Jump
Mikansei
Get CHUU!

They're on iTunes. Go buy their stuff!

Rangercast Episode 58: Rangercast at Otakon 2007 (Part 1- Prelude to a Climax)

You know, I had a whole plan set to make RC58 the Once a Ranger ep. We were going to record it Friday or Saturday night and I'd have it up by the end of the weekend and have Otakon part 1 already ready to go so I could take the week off. Unfortunately, on Friday night, Mother Nature, fate, and the fine people at Comcast got together and decided "No Tyler! No Rangercast for you!" and knocked my cable out. Comcast doesn't feel like getting out to my place to fix it until Wednesday, but that doesn't mean I didn't have a plan B to get something to keep the feed warm. So here, thanks to the power of elbow grease, Borders wi-fi, and sheer force of will, for your listening pleasure, is Part 1 (Thursday and Friday) of Otakon 2007.

I intercept Mike Dent at the airport and after some wrangling we make it down to the always-lovely Baltimore Convention Center for the Otakon's famed pre-game festivities: the pre-reg pickup. We meet up with Gerald (Anime World Order) as he shares in-depth one-syllable insights into the madness. Friday, the fun really starts. I land a brief chat with John Sirabella (Media Blasters) about how KR The First did and how it looks for future toku releases. Then later, we watch AAA rock the house, as Mike and I scream like retards during Climax Jump. And no, no bootleg audio.

Finally, we wrap up the day's fun with the full audio of the Podcaster's Roundtable, featuring yours truly, Mike, Gerald, Dave and Joel (Fast Karate for the Gentleman), Rym and Scott (Geek Nights), and Erin and Noah (Ninja Consultants). Oh yeah, we rocked that panel room.

Check out my pictures HERE!
