A planned “Power Rangers” series has been scrapped, Deadline reports.
The new series would have been helmed by “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” showrunners Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz for Disney-owned 20th Television and Hasbro Entertainment, and would have streamed on Disney+
Deadline reports the show was canceled for business reasons. Disney got cold feet about spending to produce “Power Rangers” when they do not own the underlying intellectual property.
Steinberg and Shotz continue to work on “Percy Jackson.” The third season of that show premieres in November.
This is the second failed attempt to revive “Power Rangers.” In 2020, Entertainment One (then owned by Hasbro) tapped Jonathan Entwistle (“The End of the F***ing World,” “Karate Kid: Legends”) to create a new “Power Rangers” universe. He subsequently hired Jenny Klein (“Daisy Jones & The Six,” “Jessica Jones”) to helm a planned new television series. However, the plans were shelved after creative differences between Entwistle and executives at Hasbro and Netflix and Hasbro’s sale of Entertainment One to Lionsgate.
